These hoop earrings are the latest additions to the Dark Skies Jewellery Collection. The gems are set into a 16mm silver plated base and surrounded by silver anodised aluminium rings. The ear wires are sterling silver and they are presented in a black gift box with a photographic card with information about the Sun on the reverse. They are blank on the inside for you to write your own message or greetings. Sun Hoop Earrings
The Sun is the star at the centre of our solar system and is almost three quarters Hydrogen, whilst most of the remaining mass is Helium. At around 4.6 Billion years old it is considered to be middle-aged (or a Yellow Dwarf) having already burned off about half of its store of Hydrogen. It has a surface temperature of 5500 °C compared to the Earths -88 to 58°C but inside, the temperature can reach 15 million degrees Celsius: At the Sun’s core, energy is generated by nuclear fusion, as Hydrogen converts to Helium.
The solar flares that are seen in this image occur when magnetic energy is released by the Sun during magnetic storms, which we see as sunspots. In sunspots, the magnetic lines are twisted and they spin, much like a tornado would on Earth. The Sun generates a solar wind, which is a stream of charged particles, which travel through the Solar System at approximately 450 kilometres per second. Solar wind occurs where the magnetic field of the Sun extends into space and observers near the poles on Earth sometimes see beautiful lights in the night sky known as auroras, that are the result of the solar wind interacting with the Earth's magnetic field and atmosphere.
Eventually, about 130 million years after all the Hydrogen has been burned, the Sun will expand to the point that it will engulf Mercury, Venus and the Earth and at this stage it will have become a Red Giant. The final stage of the Sun's life will occur when it collapses, retaining its enormous mass, but containing the approximate volume of our planet. When this happens, it will be called a White Dwarf.
Light from the Sun takes eight minutes to reach Earth but although this energy reaches Earth in a few minutes, it will already have taken millions of years to travel from the Sun’s core to its surface.
